What motivated you to get involved in hiring a person with disabilities?
“Dylan applied for our Green Team and we interviewed him for that position. We were impressed during the interview however did not feel he was ready for a Green Team position yet. We suggested he apply for the Part time Arena attendant position in the fall, as we felt he would be a good fit for that position. In the meantime we had a need for someone to collect garbage, clean and close the bathrooms for the summer at one of our parks and felt Dylan would be perfect for this position.”

Describe your experience in employing persons with disabilities?
(What is their role, accommodations at interview stage, how has this impacted your workplace culture, support from other staff, transitioning into the team, attendance, enthusiasm, work ethic)
“Dylan works two hours a day picking up garbage, cleaning the bathrooms and closing the bathrooms at the end of the day. Dylan brought Jeff Foster Employment Specialist from LEADS Employment Services to his interview which helped him in providing us a bit more detail about his previous jobs. Unfortunately Dylan does not see any of the other team members during his shift however he is supported by everyone. Dylan’s enthusiasm was evident from the first day and so far his attendance has been perfect and we have been able to work around his baseball schedule as well.”

Were there any accommodations? If yes, please describe accommodations and approximate costs?
“Dylan had Jeff Foster Employment Specialist from LEADS Employment Services come out for several shifts to ensure he is comfortable in his job and the tasks that he needs to complete each shift. We have not had to make any accommodations for Dylan.”

What suggestions would you give to employers who are thinking of hiring persons with disabilities to their team?
“Be open, see the possibilities. The support from LEADS Employment Services was the deciding factor for us in hiring Dylan. We wanted to make sure we were providing the right training and support for Dylan and Jeff Foster Employment Specialist definitely helped us feel comfortable in knowing that Dylan would be successful in his role.”

What sector is your business in? Health and Wellness Facility

How many employees on your team? Over 50

Describe your experience in employing persons with disabilities?
It is a positive experience to see the staff be successful and enthusiastic in running programming with Youth. Positive to watch both staff and children enjoy programming. The staff is a full child and youth staff member with some accommodations in regards to which programing’s she is comfortable running. She is always on time and on task, with a smile on her face. Natural supports are in place in the work place from team members, as well as, outside supports from Leads Employment Services.

Were there any accommodations?
If yes, please describe accommodations and approximate costs?
Accommodations are made in regards to programs and opting out of particular tasks due to physical limitations such as changing diapers. Accommodations in regards to coaching supports from Leads are at no cost.

What suggestions would you give to employers who are thinking of hiring persons with disabilities to their team?
It has been a positive experience watching individuals grow and meet their full potential with the use of accommodations and providing employment opportunities; focusing on people’s abilities not disabilities.

Assisting others in obtaining employment; thus being an active member of the community. We are providing the candidate with not only experience; but skill development, a social network, a sense of worth and accomplishment.

What sector is your business in? Customer Service

Describe your experience in employing persons with disabilities?
Position is the Poster Route. We employ 3 Leads clients for over 5 years. A positive experience in creating a job for these individuals which met both our needs as employers and skill set of clients/employees. Job coaching supports from Leads has been an assist in training clients and assisting with any barriers or concerns.

If yes, please describe accommodations and approximate costs?
Our accommodations were in job creation and job coaching.

What suggestions would you give to employers who are thinking of hiring persons with disabilities to their team?
It is Fulfilling watching individuals grow in all aspects by providing them with these employment opportunities.

What motivated you to get involved in hiring a person with disabilities?
Our motivation was giving back to the community by providing opportunities for individuals with barriers to employment. These individuals have particular skill sets but may have not received the opportunities to utilize it or show others their capabilities.

Describe your experience in employing persons with disabilities?
Administrative Assistant position. Coaching supports from Leads through the interview process. Leads and Damen Optimal worked together to create a job for these individuals which would best match the clients skills, and Damen Optimal’s needs. Job task list were created as well as accommodations in regards to hours worked. Positive experiences we witnessed growth, skill development, and independence of the individual.

12 hours a month of pay for the creation of a job and role in which did not previously exist.

What suggestions would you give to employers who are thinking of hiring persons with disabilities to their team?
Educational to watch; how accommodations can assist individuals in person growth and in meeting their full potential. Inspiring to watch natural supports in the work place present themselves/come forward.
